1.  The Motor Loses Power Whenever You Try to Accelerate

One major sign that your outboard motor's fuel filter is clogged and needs to be replaced with a spare is when you start to notice a loss of power. This loss of power is most prevalent when you attempt to go faster.

As you try to accelerate, the motor's demand for fuel greatly increases. If the fuel is unable to flow through the filter, there will not be enough to feed the motor, and it will lose power as the motor attempts to go faster.

2.  The Motor Inexplicably Revs Up and Then Cuts Off While Going at High Speeds

Another sign that you need to replace the fuel filter as soon as possible is when you find that the motor will start to rev up without you trying to go faster. As the motor reaches high speeds, it will then cut off, making it necessary for you to restart it.

When the motor revs up, pressurized fuel is making its way through spaces in the clogged filter. Then, as the speed and demand for fuel greatly increases, the filter cannot deliver the necessary fuel and makes the engine cut off.

With constant exposure to moisture, dirt, and grime, there is always a chance that the fuel filter will clog up in a short amount of time. If it clogs up completely while you are out on the water, you do not want to be caught without an extra filter so that you can replace the bad one and get back to enjoying your day.
